1. Who controls the site

Retirement Lab, available at retiring.guide, is the website and calculator described in this notice. The operator of retiring.guide acts as the controller or business for personal information processed through the site. Email info@retiring.guide.

Important: Do not enter Social Security numbers, bank-account numbers, passwords, or other direct financial-account credentials. The calculator does not need them.

2. Privacy-first calculator data

Retirement assumptions you enter—including ages, balances, income, spending, health-cost assumptions, and claiming choices—are calculated in your browser. They are not uploaded to Retirement Lab merely because you use the calculator. Browser storage may retain a saved plan on the device until you reset it, clear site data, or remove it through your browser.

Exported plan files and share links contain the assumptions you choose to include. Anyone who receives one may be able to read those assumptions. Treat them as sensitive and share them only with people you trust.

When a page is opened from a Retirement Lab share link, Google Analytics and Google AdSense are kept completely unloaded while the encoded plan remains in the URL fragment. This prevents optional third-party page scripts from reading the shared assumptions.

We do not knowingly collect the calculator assumptions on our server, and we do not sell those assumptions for money. We do not use them to make decisions about credit, insurance, employment, housing, or eligibility.

4. Cookies, analytics, and advertising

Necessary local storage is used to run the calculator and remember your privacy choice. Google Analytics and Google AdSense are optional and are blocked until the related permission is granted. Consent signals use Google Consent Mode v2. You can reject optional categories as easily as accepting them, use granular settings, and reopen the privacy center at any time.

When Global Privacy Control is enabled, the site treats it as an opt-out of sale/sharing and targeted or personalized advertising. Advertising remains locked off while that signal is active. See the Cookie Policy for details.

5. Legal bases for visitors in Europe

Necessary processing is based on legitimate interests in operating, securing, and delivering the service, and where applicable on steps you request by using the calculator. Optional analytics and advertising storage are based on consent. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing.

Google services may process information in countries outside your residence. Where required, transfers rely on approved safeguards described by Google. The site operator should not enable AdSense for visitors in the EEA, United Kingdom, or Switzerland without a Google-certified consent management platform configured in the AdSense account.

6. California and other U.S. state privacy rights

Depending on where you live and whether applicable legal thresholds are met, you may have rights to know or access personal information, correct it, delete it, obtain a portable copy, opt out of sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or certain profiling, and appeal a denied request. California residents also have a right to non-discrimination for exercising privacy rights.

Retirement Lab treats disabling Advertising—through the banner, privacy center, or Global Privacy Control—as an opt-out of sale/sharing and targeted advertising. Use Your Privacy Choices for instructions and requests.

7. Retention

Locally saved calculator data remains until you reset the plan or clear browser storage. Consent choices expire after 180 days so that the site can ask again. Support records are kept only as long as reasonably needed to answer, protect the service, meet legal duties, and resolve disputes. Analytics and advertising retention is governed by the configured Google account settings and applicable Google terms; the site operator should use the shortest period reasonably necessary.

8. Security and children

The site uses browser-side calculations, transport encryption when served over HTTPS, restrictive security headers, and limited third-party loading. No website can guarantee absolute security. The service is intended for adults making retirement-planning illustrations and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect children’s personal information.

9. Changes and complaints

Material changes will be posted on this page with a revised date. Visitors in the EEA or United Kingdom may complain to their local data-protection authority. U.S. residents may contact the relevant state regulator. Contact us first where practical so we can address the concern. Email info@retiring.guide.
